Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
